Good Points

Solid, well crafted machine that takes up a minimum of counter space.

The Brand new Gaggia Baby. This is the recently introduced and updated version of the Highly successful Gaggia Baby. In our opinion Gaggia have done a great job with subtle enhancements to styling. This is a brand new colour to the baby range, Ivory. It looks fabulous and we are certain it will blend in with almost any kitchen. The most important thing, of course, is that the new Gaggia Baby makes great coffee.

This coffee maker combines the technology and the attention to detail necessary for making a cup of coffee, perfect every time. But Gaggia Baby does more than just make coffee. It's versatility makes it ideal for heating water for tea and other hot beverages. Froth your own milk for smooth cappuccino and lattes using the special milk steamer/frother.

The whole machine is easy to clean thanks to the detachable components. The 'drip saver' decompression system is designed to stop internal parts getting clogged or dirty.

This is a super espresso machine, the ability to steam milk and produce espresso in an instant is an excellent feature. The control system is very easy, with single and double espresso buttons which can be preset. The single button has a pre-infusion which ensures the coffee is damp before extraction. You also have the ability to manually pull an espresso using the 'M' button. The steam nozzle is excellent and produces consistently good milk but you do have to keep the pin sized hole near the top clean to ensure it works well. Overall it works exceptionally well and looks fab on the counter top. A*

This is a good looking and solid machine. Generally the external engineering is well thought out, everything fits well without any of the awkward fiddling or necessary wiggling about of components that I have found on cheaper coffee makers. Apart from the frothing wand, that is - what were Gaggia thinking? It may seem that it only needs a wipe but when I removed the plastic attachment of the wand and went to the nail breaking effort of pulling off the little washers to check the cleanliness within, oh dear. I don't mean just the plastic extension of the wand that is inserted into the milk as this comes off easily, but rather the retainer that this screws onto. It involves removing two tiny plastic/rubber washers and drop these on the floor at your peril, they are tiny - I have no idea how easy it would be to get replacemts for these. This is the only way to be sure the whole plastic section of the wand is free from milk residue. Ick, is all I can say, thick and sticky, brownish residue in abundance. This spoils an otherwise good coffee maker. Since it is not a cheap item and Gaggia are a reputable manufacturer, surely attention to simplicity in maintaining the hygiene of their machine should have been a design feature.
It does make great coffee, good crema and temperature. Although there is improvement, I am still struggling to get a milk froth that isn't like a dry meringue but from everything I have read about the art of milk frothing it is likely that my lack of expertise is to blame rather than the machine.
Lastly, this is not Gaggia's fault but I got my Baby Class via Garraways and although the external packaging for posting was sound, the Gaggia Box had clearly been opened, was battered and ripped in places and resealed with sellotape, presumably by a four year old as it was so messy and looked awful. This has left me wondering if it had been on display or perhaps been returned by a previous buyer. Since it was a lovely gift from my father I have not made a fuss about this but I would think twice about buying from Garraways in future. In fact, I wouldn't think of buying from them at all if they thought it acceptable to foist this upon a mail recipient.
If a good Espresso is your goal, though, the Baby Class is up to the challenge.

The new Baby range is excellent! However, after giving the Baby Twin a test drive I swapped it for a Baby Class D and was much happier. The problem with the Baby Twin is that it does not have 2 boilers; it uses a heating element between the boiler and the steamer to create steam 'instantly'. In reality this is NOT the case. When you open the steam valve water will come out until the element has reached optimum temperature. This means not only do you have to wait between 10-15 secs for steam but you have to keep emptying the drip tray! Once the steam starts being released it has about half the power of the Baby Class D (the same machine but with a single boiler). My Baby Twin experience was not great....Go for the Baby Class D, it's an amazing machine.

I have the baby class D. I`ve used it with very fine ground coffee (from
my own grinder), as well as Gaggia preground. I think it works very well,
if you do as it says in the instruction book, which is don`t tamp hard. If
you do, the coffee gets a strange burnt taste and the crema reduces. Do as
it says and it produces a really good espresso coffee (I am italian by the
way so know what a good espresso tastes like). As for the company, I have
had nothing but helpful friendly people. I did buy a machine that didn`t
work well and they replaced without argument.

The Baby Class D is very small and compact, taking up very little space. It comes complete with all the bits you need for measuring coffee for either espresso or cappucino drinks - however it doesn't include a jug for frothing milk.

It heats up quickly, and the "frother" is brilliant - if a bit noisy! The powerful pump makes for great coffee. There are two spouts, so in theory you should be able to make 2 espressos at the same time. However, I have found that is not as easy as it sounds! If you don't hold the cup directly under the spout it does sometimes spray around a bit!
The big disadvantage of this machine is that when making cappucino, you need to empty the coffee chamber for each cup you make. This can be a bit laborious - and messy.

In 2 years I have had one problem with it - my machine was about 3 months old when one of the buttons broke. Gaggia were extremely professional in collecting the machine, repairing it and getting it back to me very quickly.
I would recommend the Baby Gaggia - it's not cheap, but with espresso machines, I really think you get what you pay for.

I have wasted a lot of money on coffee makers in the past.

However this Gaggia Baby makes one of the best cups of coffee I have tasted.

It feels well machined and solid from the moment you ease it out of the box. It has a large easy to fill water tank, a cup warmer and looks good as well.

The coffee it produces is superb, good crema layer, (from Gaggia beans ground in a Gaggia grinder!)

I release some hot water to warm the cup before making the coffee.

The milk frother is awesome, creating a nice dense but light foam and heating the milk.

The resulting cappuccino is full of flavour and nice and hot.

It takes almost no cleaning, a rinse of the coffee holder and a wipe of the milk krother is all that is required.

I was so worried about spending so much on a coffee machine, but it is worth every single penny!

I have a passion for great espresso, and I'm obsessed with finding a coffee house which serves the perfect double espresso every time. Since moving away from London, this has proved more and more difficult.

I used to work in an Italian restaurant, so I know what is required to prepare an espresso, but if the 'barista' of the day doesn't share that same passion, then the espresso will reflect the fact, much to my disappointment.

I've previously avoided buying a machine of my own, mainly because I've not been confident of investing so much money, only to be disappointed by an inadequate machine. I've even had this very machine demonstrated to me in Whittards, but felt hugely underwhelmed by the results - clearly a passionless assistant.

Nevertheless, I continued to read reviews, applauding this mid-ranged machine. So I decided to take the plunge, and this afternoon, after owning this machine for three days, I have just produced what I would describe as the 'perfect double espresso'.

There are a few simple, but essential, procedures to follow in order to the get the best out of this machine. The instruction booklet is fine, but I come with experience too. If you don't have that passion, and don't want to put the effort in, then buy one of the many pod machine on the market (- I have, however, never had a satisfactory coffee from one of those machines). If you do have the same passion as me, then you may just find this machine will produce an espresso better than most of the cafes in your town.

(Until I can afford a decent grinder, I will continue to use Illy for my perfect espresso).

On returning from holiday skiing in Italy having enjoyed great Italian espresso, latte and cappuccinos, my wife bought me this Gaggia for my birthday. Incredibly generous of her, I had always lusted after a Gaggia.

I was 100% right to.

My wife had done plenty of research into which Gaggia to get me, and the Gaggia Baby Dose Red seemed to consistently raved about. Now it's my turn to.

Really easy to assemble, though having to remove the chrome overflow pipe to remove the tank was tricky (it's screwing it back on that's tricky as you could lose the pipe you have to screw it onto inside - maybe it was a problem with my machine).

Anyway, with minutes, I had it set up, filled with water and switched on. The tank holds loads and is very easy to fill. There's spaced for a few espresso cups and saucers on top to warm, though if you do want them to warm up, and get really hot coffee too, I agree with the other reviewers that you need to leave it on a while to really heat up.

The filter holder is very sturdy, in fact the whole machine is so robust and well put together you can feel the quality. It comes with two filter cups, one and two cup, but you'll probably only use the two cup filter cup.

It is a bit noisy, but I don't care. It's a powerful machine and you get the impression it's very much function over form with this Gaggia. It does whatever it takes to get the best possible cup of coffee.

The espresso is superb. The milk frother takes a bit of getting used to but is really effective, creating a really good frothy cappuccino time after time - you will have to rinse the frother nozzle though after each use. the only criticism is that the nozzle is quite low to the level of your worktop so getting a cup under it can be tricky. Not a real problem though.

Everyone who tastes the coffee that it produces falls in love with it and wants a Gaggia - I reckon we've probably sold 2-3 machines for Gaggia so far. If you're reading this Gaggia, we'd like commission!

Seriously though, if you want a sturdy machine, built to last, that's great looking, but not just for design’s sake, that makes impeccable coffees, this is it.
